i'm aiming at it too!
I am using Canon Powershot G9 also. It is good enough "IF" you have the additional canon original speedlites and a diffuser. It makes a huge different when you capture your shot with this extra flash light.
I didn't go for DSLR coz it is too bulky to carry around DAILY! plus I travel a lot.
If you wanna go for DSLR, you can go for NIKON / CANON.
first timer.. maybe you should consider Nikon D60. Good price, good stuff, although can't fight the magnificent D90, but still, D60 is a good bet. =)
